The North Woodside Community Centre is proud to offer a range of new programming this year.  The winter session is fast approaching!  Below you will find all the necessary information on dates, times, cost, etc.

Elderobics

“Fitness adds years to your life and life to your years”

 

An exercise and educational program for older adults.

 

Who is Elderobics for?

-          Elderobics is an exercise program designed for older adults.  Participants are encouraged to exercise at their own pace.

 

What can I expect to do in Elderobics?

-          The exercise sessions are led by qualified YMCA fitness instructors and set to lively music.  Each session is made up of four parts:

-          Warm Up

-          Low Impact Aerobics

-          Muscular strength and endurance

-          Stretching and Relaxation

 

Why should I do Elderobics?

-          Exercise sessions will help you:

-          Improve joint flexibility

-          Increase muscle strength and toning

-          Improve heart and lung fitness

-          Promote better posture

-          Improve balance

-          Promote relaxation and reduce stress

-          Meet other people

-          Prevent illness or disease

 

How much does Elderobics Cost?

-          There is an annual enhancement fee of $5.00 and the fee per class is $2.50

 

What Should I wear?

-          Dress comfortably in loose-fitting, light-weight clothing. 

-          Wear good sneakers or shoes with non-slip soles that will absorb impact.

-          Bring a water bottle to drink from during class.

 

Elderobics is held Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:30-10:30 am in the Gym

 Drama

Drama is about creativity! Through theatre games, storytelling activities, movement and voice exploration, we will focus on creative ways to tell and perform stories. Program will culminate with a performance for family and friends. Comfortable clothing required - no jeans, please.

8 Week Sessions

Program offered to children ages 7-13.
Thursday Nights 6:00-7:30 pm

Fall Session:  Jan 31 - March 27th

Performance for family and friends will be held April 4th 6:00-7:30 pm

 

Cost for each session is $40.00

HRM Programs

The North Woodside Community Centre hosts a number of HRM based programs.  Those being offered for the Fall and Winter are as follows:

HRM Yoga (8 Weeks)
January 7 – February 25
Mondays 6:00-7:30 pm

HRM Sketch & Draw for Kids
(8 Weeks)

January 17 – March 6
Thursdays 6:00-7:00 pm

St. John's Ambulance Babysitting Course

Saturday February 16, 2008

9:00-5:00 pm (one hour lunch is included)

Cost per person is $30.00.  Each child should bring a doll.  Course is taught by an instructor from St. John's Ambulance.

Stained Glass

Instructed by Wayne Kelly, a stained glass veteran who has been teaching the craft for over 25 years.  He has had a stained glass studio for over 15 years now and his work has been exhibited as far as Toronto, mainly being exhibited throughout Eastern Canada.

 

The Stained glass beginner course will be working with the copper foil method developed by Louis C. Tiffany in the early 1900’s.  It is a technique, which is very good for smaller work and 3D projects.  Students will complete one or two small projects; either a stained glass panel or a small lamp.

 

Supplies/Materials:

-          A $15.00 material fee for practice glass, ruler, permanent marker and glass cutter will be required the first night of class.

-          Main tools will be provided by the instructor.

-          Students will be required to obtain any replenishable supplies.  (Generally $20-$50 will be spent on supplies.)

 

Classes will run Tuesday Nights 7:00-9:00 pm


Winter Session:  Jan. 22nd – Feb 26th 

 

Cost for the 6 week session is $55.00

Hip Hop Dance

 

Youth & Adult Age 16 and Up

Monday 8:00-9:00 pm

 

This adult class not only teaches you the many hard hitting moves of hip hop, but also is a great way to exercise.  Come out and get energized.

 

Bring to class:

               Adults: Water, running shoes and comfortable exercise clothes.

 

Cost is $30.00

Starts January 7 - February 25th

Cooking For Kids

Hey kids! Do you want to help mom and dad out in the kitchen?  Want to learn to make delicious meals in a short amount of time?  If so, come on out every Wednesday from 6:00-7:30 pm and learn how to cook great meals and desserts.

 

Learn how to cook from simple to complex.  Learn all the skills needed to cook great meals at home.  We will be making things like cookies, cakes and great dinner ideas like spaghetti dinners and many other delicious dishes.

 

If you love to cook or eat, come and learn to make and try great new foods.


Wednesday Nights from 6:00-7:30 pm

Class is for children ages 8-13.

 

Winter Session:  Jan. 16th – Mar. 26th

(No class held Mar. 12 due to March Break)

 

Cost for the 10 week session is $40.00

 

*Note:  All food supplies will be provided.

Preschooler Play

Preschool for the ages of 3-5, Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30-11:30 am.  A play environment where the children will play games, do crafts, sing songs, read stories, gain social skills and have fun.  Children must bring their own snacks each day.  Children must be toilet trained.

8 classes per month.  Payment is $36.00 per month.  Payment options available.

Social Music Dances

Dances will be held as normal every third Friday of the month, running from September to May.
